The Idea
Last year I was lazy. Sure, I made some stuff here and there, wrote some code, contributed to OSS, but it wasn't enough. This year I want to change that. So here's the idea: think JoCo's Thing a Week meets Maker Faire. Every week I've got to make something. Personally they're going to be tech related projects: programs, snippets, websites, instructional videos, etc.
Here's where everyone else comes in. I want you to do it too. Anything you want, as long as, when Sunday rolls around you have something to show off that's finished you're golden.
The Rules
The Good
- Start on Monday, show it off on Sunday
- Can make anything you want: song, contribute to an open source project, write your own new stuff, build a birdhouse, whatever. As long as by Sunday you can show it off to the class.
- Group projects are allowed and encouraged! Can't think of something? Someone else need help with their project? Lend a hand. But no highschool "Yes,Mr. Teacher, of course we both contributed to this project." bullshit.
The Bad
- If you don't have something by Sunday you will be punished. I'm thinking of community voted punishments a la Brotherhood 2.0 and the Vlogbrothers. Nothing illegal or physically harmful but enough to make you want to finish on time.
The Ugly
- Every Sunday, when you're done, you're going to go to /r/projectmustang and post your glorious work of make-fu
- Post with a title like so: Week # - [Name] - [Short Desc of thing you made]
- Give some info on the project: What it does, work that went into it, why you chose this project, etc. (Links to your own blog with more details are allowed but I've disabled link posts so put it in the Description)
- I've hidden the downvotes. No assholes. Constructive criticism only. If you do have constructive criticism, guess what, you just gave yourself a new project: Improving on that project.
TL;DR
You, make 1 thing every week of the year starting January 9th. Can be any thing, but must be a thing that you put effort into. I don't want to see any balls of pocket lint labelled art. Post it to /r/projectmustang. Get feedback, give feedback. Grow the community. The more people involved, the more shit gets done. If I'm the only one to do this I'll be lonely and sad and may not finish it. Do it for me! Do it for the children!
Mustang? WTF?
I originally called it Project 51 (make one thing for 51 weeks of the year, you get the first week off). Then shortened it to P51. Then to Project Mustang (P51 Mustang.)
Questions, feedback, etc.
I want to keep all the community activity in the subreddit so it's not scattered everywhere. So post questions, comments and suggestions there (see above link to /r/ProjectMustang)
